Have you ever done something you knew you shouldn’t do, but you wanted to so bad that you did it anyway? Maybe it was eating something your mom or dad said not to, or maybe it was being mean to your brother or sister because they were mean to you first, or staying up late when you knew you were supposed to be in bed. Or maybe it was something else, but still, you knew when you did it that you shouldn’t have.
The Bible tells us that if you know what is right and you don’t do it, that’s called sin (James 4:17).
And do you know what else the Bible says?
It says that everyone in the whole world has sinned (Romans 3:23). Even the good guys. Your mom and dad, pastors, me. All of us have sinned because we have all done something we knew we shouldn’t have done.
Do you know what that means?
The Bible tells us that the punishment for sin is death. And not just dying so we aren’t alive anymore, but dying spiritually which means that we are separated from God forever.
In Matthew 25 Jesus described two options for what happens after someone dies. He said they could either spend forever being punished, or spend forever with God (vs. 46), and 1 John 4:8 says, “God is love.”
One of my favorite verses in the Bible is John 3:16, it says, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”
Jesus came to live a perfect life and die on the cross for our sins. Then, God raised Him up and made Him alive again. Now He will live forever, and He said He is saving a spot for us, too (John 14:3)!
He paid for our sin, and He wants to share His reward with us—how cool is that?!
Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
So while all of us have sinned, God sacrificed His own Son so that we could live forever with Him—He loves us that much!
However, the Bible says that we have to choose whether or not we love Him, too.
It tells us in Romans 10:9 that in order to spend eternity with God, we have to tell others who He is and what He has done for us, and believe it in our hearts. We can’t just say it and not care, we really have to believe that God sent Jesus to die for our sins because of His love for us.
If we really believe that God did that for us, it can change our whole lives.
Sure, we will still live in the same house, go to the same school, and be in the same situations, but God will be there with us. In fact, He will come and live inside our hearts. We can talk to Him whenever we want to, and He will remind us of right and wrong.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 tells us that Jesus paid the price for our sin, and if we accept Him as our Savior, we should honor Him with our lives. We can’t just decide that what Jesus did was good, we have to decide to let what He did change us. We have to be willing to have a relationship with Him, and let Him live in our hearts.
It isn’t a decision to be taken lightly, or something to do just because your best friend is doing it. It’s personal.
