A Mom's Struggle

by Susan
(Charleston, WV)

I have been having a rough time with my 16 yr old daughter. I have discovered messages on her phone that she has sent that are extremely sexual and intended to sexually arouse the receiver. They are explicit enough to make me question how far she has gone. She is a baptized Christian, but her definition of sex is penetration/intercourse and no matter what I have said or the discussion we have had it comes down to me being old fashioned and out of touch with today's standards.

I feel like I have failed in my efforts as a mother to teach her the Godly standards that I know to be truth. I am so thankful to find this article and to receive confirmation that the truth in God has not changed.

I will print this off for both of my daughters to read and will pray that God will use this to bring some healing to our relationship and to cause them to re-evaluate their definitions and actions. I thank God that we can all be forgiven and given a new beginning when we sincerely seek His guidance and His plan.

This is a difficult time to be a parent and the devil revels in his ability to deceive and cause destruction. I love my daughters and I'm standing my ground, but I feel like I'm losing them and I know that only God can bring a change in our family. He will honor their commitments to Him and will bring them back to Himself, the detour just may be further from Him than I would wish.

But I will continue to love and pray and do what I can to honor God and stand for His truth. Thank you for give me encouragement and support. The devil would have me doubt myself and God's Word, Thank You and God bless the readers and all those struggling with this issue. God preserve our children and draw them always closer to Himself.

A Mom's Struggle
by: Anonymous

Susan,
I pray for you in this difficult struggle. I am sure you want to reach out to your daughter without sounding too "preachy." Perhaps, if she's ready to be open to it, allow her to let Jesus change her heart and be the one to "preach" the good news to her soul.

Jesus talks about what it means to be salt and light in his Sermon on the Mount in Mathew 5. I love being reminded that Jesus declares that we are to be salt and light, that it is in our nature if we are truly living like we are His people, that it's a natural response to portray these qualities. It would be unlike salt in nature to not be salty- to not have a zest, a flavor like none other, preventing decay. Being a light must mean portraying light because why cover it up with darkness once it's been lit?

If you can, remind your daughter that she is a prized beauty in God's eyes, called to make changes first in her heart that hopefully will eventually change her outward behaviors and how she thinks of herself in relation to guys. If we're only focused on changing outward behaviors, we are attempting to earn God's favor, but by attempting to repent and change heart, we are acknowledging the gift He gives us as He's allows us to walk in the light and be a changed being.

I hope this little bit of encouragement helps along the way. I know it's not easy, but keep with your diligence. God won't give up on your daughter, but I pray she won't give up on Him, either.

In Him,
Julie
