STUDY TO KNOW IS THE KEY

Aubrey, study the Old Testament about "marking your body." You'll get your answer.

And remember this, your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.

Be blessed.

It's about the heart

Aubrey,
There are a lot of different ideas within Christianity about tattoos and piercings, and it can cause unnecessary arguments amongst members of the Body. It's one of those issues, like spiritual gifts, drinking, etc. that I think distract us from what's really on the heart of God. Man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart. He doesn't care what clothes we wear, what our hair looks like, or whether we have holes in our ears or not. All He cares about is whether or not we love Him with all that we are.

As far as tattoos go, when the Old Testament talks about not marking the body, it's because the pagans used to mark their bodies with the symbols of their dead ancestors and would scratch themselves for certain rituals (Leviticus 19:28). If you read the Old Testament through, you'll see there is a constant theme of God calling His people to be set apart. He instructs them not to mark their bodies not because it's evil in and of itself, but because He wanted them to be separate from the pagans. It's just like He told them not to eat certain food in the Old Testament. Those foods weren't evil, He just wanted them to stand out as a chosen people. Once Jesus came though, He abolished the law and they were allowed to eat those foods that were once forbidden.

Like the Israelites, we are called to be set apart so that the world knows that we truly are followers of Christ. In my own opinion, I don't feel that having tattoos disqualifies you from being a true follower of Christ, just as much as dressing goth doesn't mean you worship Satan. If God truly looks at the heart, while men look at the outward appearance, He's going to choose whomever has the right heart...not the one who looks right (according to our standards).

The scripture a lot of people have thrown at me (I have a tattoo and my nose was pierced for a while) is that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6). I feel this scripture, like many scriptures, has been misused to prove a point. If you take the scripture within context, it's not talking about marking your body. It's not even speaking physically at all! It's talking about sin, specifically sexual immorality, defiling our Spirit man and ultimately defiling the Body of Christ.

I could go on for a long time, but I'll just say this. There's a book called Red Moon Rising (one of my favorites) that talks about a revival that went on in the UK that involved a bunch of tattooed biker dudes that would typically never be allowed in the church. God will use whomever He wants and it doesn't matter to Him whether they have tattoos or not. That doesn't mean you can get any kind of tattoo you want, but if you're really considering it, pray and see what God reveals to you.
